we been here

Rome, Georgia | The sensory experience commissioned for the “We Been Here” exhibition was designed to experiment with lengthening attendee focus in order to interact with the visual art from a differing perspective.

Attendees were instructed on how to wear the headphones and control the volume, and assured that the quality of sound would be consistent as they walked the gallery.

sensory activity

Attendees were instructed to:

  1. visit paintings and sculptures that they had already interacted with, prior to the start of the activity

  2. throughout the listening experience, choose one piece of art to stand (or sit) with

  3. Re-read the artist’s description of the piece and focus on the art for the duration of one full song (3-4 minutes). Highly encouraged to stay with one piece per song to increase focus and minimize distraction

  4. For each pieces, notice the brush strokes, the blending of the paint/oil or textures within the handmade sculptures. Pay attention to the faces and interactions between objects in each painting. Ask yourself, does the music change or further enhance the story of the artists’ work? The goal is to notice and allow.

  5. When the attendee needs a break from the works, they were encouraged to visit other pieces or sit with the music to continue their processing.
